From news emerging about Sirem suppliers, to the latest developments about Senotex sensors, the YB Components blog is committed to keeping our readers up-to-date about numerous aspects related to industrial parts and technology.

This week we will explore some exciting developments emerging in the world of magnetic gear technology and the different benefits this technology provides.

New developments in magnetic gear technology is being dubbed as transforming a diverse range of applications, from wind turbines to hybrid vehicles.

As Industrial Technology reports, a number of new innovations have been surfacing within the magnetic gears sector. Fixed-ration magnetic gears, magnetically-geared motor generators and, more latterly, a magnetic continuously variable transmission.

How does magnetic gear technology work?

As with all gear technology, with magnetic gears, one shaft rotates at a different speed to the other shaft. What is different between traditional gearbox technology and the likes of Liming gearboxes and Heynau gearboxes, is that magnetic gear technology uses the magnetic field of powerful rare earth magnets to connect the shafts and transmit power instead of relying on meshing teeth.

Inner, middle and outer rings

As Industrial Technology explains, a magnetic gear consists of three rings and is directly related to an epicyclic, or planetary gear. These inner and outer rings are arranged in a north and south alternating patterns and are powerful magnets. The outer ring comprises of a high number of magnets. It is typically held stationary in conventional gear applications. By contrast, the inner ring consists of a low number of magnets which are connected to the high speed shaft. The middle ring comprises of numerous steel segments that are usually connected to the low speed shaft and are held within a mechanical structure.

With the three rings working in collaboration, a magnetic gear essentially uses permanent magnets to transmit power between the input and output shaft without relying on mechanical contact.

So what are the primary advantages of magnetic gear technology?

According to Magnomatics, a pioneering, high-tech firm that is based on developing and manufacturing innovative magnetic gear technology to numerous industries around the world, the benefits of this type of gear technology include:

.               High reliability

.               Increased efficiency (>99% at full load and high part load efficiency)

.               No transmission oil required

.               Low maintenance

.               Transmission through a sealed wall

.               Physical isolation between shafts

.               Torque fuse protection

.               Drivetrain pulsations are eliminated through compliant transmission

.               Extremely low vibration and acoustic noise

Whether you rely on traditional types of gears and the likes of Kumera gearboxes and Danfoss bauer industrial gearboxes, or are reaping the benefits of pioneering magnetic gear technology, one feature remains consistent – in order to prevent gearbox failure, preventative maintenance is the key to healthy gears and increased gearbox longevity.
